Additional calories above what your body normally needs is required for new muscle tissue to be created.)You estimated what your daily calorie maintenance level is. It’s almost like an extra surplus on top of the required surplus. For that reason, we need to avoid making the surplus TOO big. At the same time, if the caloric surplus is TOO small, muscle will either not be built at all, or it will be built at a rate so unbelievably slow that it might as well not even exist in the first place. ![]() This means that the goal here is to get the surplus just right. So, with all of that said, here are my recommendations for most people, most of the time. Whatever your maintenance level is, just be 2. Women: 1. 25 additional calories per day. For example, if you are a girl with a daily calorie maintenance level of 2. Whatever your maintenance level is, just be 1. So, take the estimated calorie maintenance level you got in the previous step and create your ideal caloric surplus. Taaadaaa! Make sure you write it down. Additional calories above this amount would cause too much fat gain, and fewer calories would likely slow down muscle growth to nonexistent levels. That’s why this is the caloric surplus that will usually produce the best results possible in terms of maximizing muscle gains and minimizing fat gains for the majority of the population looking to build muscle. Of course, one of the main reasons this surplus is so ideal is that it will cause you to gain weight at the ideal rate of weight gain. What ideal rate of weight gain, you ask? This one. If you fall below it, you’ll be gaining way too little muscle (or more likely, none whatsoever). The best possible muscle building results are guaranteed to follow. Are you losing weight or just maintaining your current weight? If so, your surplus is too low (or it just doesn’t exist at all) and therefore needs to be increased. So, just add about 2. Based on what happens, come right back here and follow the appropriate instructions. Are you gaining weight faster than the ideal rate? If so, your surplus is too big and it needs to be reduced. Just remove about 2. Based on what happens, come right back here and follow the appropriate instructions. The 17 Day Diet (2011) by Mike Moreno: Food list Get the motivation you need to lose 10 pounds in a month or less! DO NOT use this diet more than four times a year. There should be a loss of up to 1 stone, variations of the die will have a MAJOR effect on the amount of weight you. I’ve seen the elite implementation of all three in working with professional athletes. In this post, we’ll explore what I refer to as the “slow- carb diet”. In the last six weeks, I have cut from about 1. This is the only diet besides the rather extreme Cyclical Ketogenic Diet (CKD) that has produced veins across my abdomen, which is the last place I lose fat (damn you, Scandinavian genetics). ![]() Here are the four simple rules I followed. The following foods are thus prohibited, except for within 1. If you avoid eating anything white, you’ll be safe. Rule #2: Eat the same few meals over and over again. The most successful dieters, regardless of whether their goal is muscle gain or fat loss, eat the same few meals over and over again. ![]() ![]() Mix and match, constructing each meal with one from each of the three following groups: Proteins: Egg whites with one whole egg for flavor. Chicken breast or thigh. Grass- fed organic beef. Pork. Legumes: Lentils. Black beans. Pinto beans. ![]() The closer you are to your goal weight, though, the. Discover how to lose 10 pounds fast. This is a diet that can help you lose 10 pounds in just 3 days without strenuous exercise or prescriptions. The 3 day military diet is cheap. Vegetables: Spinach. Asparagus. Peas. Mixed vegetables. Eat as much as you like of the above food items. ![]() ![]() Just remember: keep it simple. Pick three or four meals and repeat them. Almost all restaurants can give you a salad or vegetables in place of french fries or potatoes. Surprisingly, I have found Mexican food, swapping out rice for vegetables, to be one of the cuisines most conducive to the “slow carb” diet. Most people who go on “low” carbohydrate diets complain of low energy and quit, not because such diets can’t work, but because they consume insufficient calories. A 1/2 cup of rice is 3. Vegetables are not calorically dense, so it is critical that you add legumes for caloric load. Some athletes eat 6- 8x per day to break up caloric load and avoid fat gain. I think this is ridiculously inconvenient. I eat 4x per day: 1. Discovery Channel before bed. Here are some of my meals that recur again and again: Scrambled Eggology pourable egg whites with one whole egg, black beans, and microwaved mixed vegetables. Grass- fed organic beef, pinto beans, mixed vegetables, and extra guacamole (Mexican restaurant)Grass- fed organic beef (from Trader Joe’s), lentils, and mixed vegetables. ![]() Rule #3: Don’t drink calories. Drink massive quantities of water and as much unsweetened iced tea, tea, diet sodas, coffee (without white cream), or other no- calorie/low- calorie beverages as you like. Do not drink milk, normal soft drinks, or fruit juice. I’m a wine fanatic and have at least one glass of wine each evening, which I believe actually aids sports recovery and fat- loss. Recent research into resveratrol supports this. ![]() Rule #4: Take one day off per week. I recommend Saturdays as your “Dieters Gone Wild” day. I am allowed to eat whatever I want on Saturdays, and I go out of my way to eat ice cream, Snickers, Take 5, and all of my other vices in excess. I make myself a little sick and don’t want to look at any of it for the rest of the week. Paradoxically, dramatically spiking caloric intake in this way once per week increases fat loss by ensuring that your metabolic rate (thyroid function, etc.) doesn’t downregulate from extended caloric restriction. That’s right: eating pure crap can help you lose fat. Welcome to Utopia.###If you enjoyed this post, check out my latest book, The 4- Hour Body, #1 New York Times and #1 Amazon bestseller. Because I talked to a medical professional about what it is, how it works, and if I was a candidate for the diet. I know this diet is not for everybody. And please, if you have any tips or recipes to share, I’m all ears! What Is the 5. 00 Calorie Diet? The 5. 00 calorie diet is sometimes referred to the HCG diet. The 5. 00 calorie diet is normally done with the HCG diet, though it can be done separately. With the 5. 00 calorie diet, you restrict your caloric intake to 5. No sugar, no fats (not even good ones), no starches, no alcohol, no treats. It can be safe to do as long as you don’t do it for more than 4. So you’ll supposedly get a muscle- toned body that sheds weight at a reported average of 1 pound per day for men, and about 1/2 pound a day for women. You take the HCG daily via a pill or injectible. Some people just do just the 5. HCG with it as well. Here I’m discussing ONLY the 5. What Does the 5. 00 Calorie Diet Consist Of? As you can imagine, it’s not super fun. For breakfast you can have tea (I drink green tea which is known to help encourage weight loss) or coffee. You can have a tablespoon total of low- fat milk daily. Lunch and dinner include 1. I don’t even eat the breadstick anymore. Meats are limited to lean beef, chicken breast, veal, white fish, shrimp, crab or lobster, while vegetables are limited to spinach, cabbage, chard, tomatoes, onions, fennel, radishes, cucumbers, celery, bell peppers, mushrooms, green beans, asparagus and green salads. For your fruit, you can choose from an apple, orange, half of a grapefruit or a handful of strawberries. Tips: You aren’t supposed to have the same meat, veggies, or fruit twice a day. So if you have chicken and asparagus for lunch, don’t have it again for dinner. It’s acceptable to have your fruit separately from your meat and veggies. I usually have mine mid- morning and as a dessert after dinner. You also shouldn’t mix fruits, however you can mix veggies. So you can mix mushrooms, onions, and asparagus together, but not strawberries and apples. I will say that I have mixed berries together with no problem. If you mix and experience a weight stall or gain, don’t do it again. A lot of this is trial and error based on how your body reacts. The most important thing about the 5. Drink a TON of water. At least a gallon a day, especially during the summer. You can wake up your water with this simple recipes. I have just completed my first 2. I lost almost 1. 4 pounds and 9 inches in my chest, waist, hips, and thighs. You’ll be detoxing from sugar and junk food, and you will be miserable to be around. You’ll reconsider what you are doing. I was told Days 3- 6 are the worst, and they were. But stick with it because you’ll feel better soon, promise. Nobody told me this one! You may notice bad body odor and bad breath. It’s all of that detoxing you’re doing! I asked Jason if he could smell it, and he couldn’t. Maybe your sense of smell is heightened as well, I don’t know. But the body odor does go away. The bad breath sticks around. Chew gum, make sure it’s sugar- free gum. I have been chewing this Sugar Free Chewing Gum Sweetened with Xylitol Peppermint and really like it. It’s hard to eat only a very limited menu and not be able to eat what everybody else is eating. You may even want to become a hermit and avoid social settings where people are eating and drinking and being merry. I’ve tried to hang out (4th of July sucked – I couldn’t eat anything at our get together), and it’s really hard. You can’t cheat at all. If you cheat with sugar, fat, or starches, you’re taking 2 steps back. I prefer hot veggies over salads. The first almost 2 weeks I tried to eat a salad with meat and either balsamic vinegar or lemon squeezed on it. I got burnt out on salads quickly. So now for lunch I fry a piece of chicken or turkey burger with some veggies. It takes a bit longer, but it’s worth it. Seasonings are your friend. You need to church things up. Just make sure whatever spices and seasonings you use are sugar- free. Try veggies and meat with Bragg’s liquid aminos (it taste kind of like soy sauce), use Frank’s hot sauce and Tabasco, and use garlic and onions for flavor. Stevia and flavored liquid stevia (my favorite flavors are the Vanilla Cream and Coconut) in place of sugar. They aren’t cheap, but you only use a few drops at a time so they last forever. Sugar- free doesn’t necessarily mean sugar- free just because the label says so. Brands hide sugar under different names like maltose, maltodextrin, and sucrose to name a few. Here’s a list of the 5. Make sure you are checking label ingredients! You’ll get sick of eating plain meat with just seasonings on it, so get creative. Branch out and try new things. Jason and I LOVED these lean curry burgers that we served over spinach with a side of lemon cucumbers. The recipe calls for garam masala, and I have a recipe for it here. This clean eating un- stuffed bell peppers recipe (minus the corn and cheese) is a favorite, too. Use chicken broth in place of the coconut oil. And this berry salad (minus the chocolate chips!) is amazing as well. There are also a ton of recipe boards for this diet on Pinterest. I’ll be sharing some recipes, too. You shouldn’t exercise on this diet! I’m totally not making this up. You won’t have energy for a big workout, and if you do, you’re body will go into starvation mode trying to store all of the fat and calories it has. A short walk or light yoga is fine, but anything else is no bueno. I’ve recently fallen in love with yoga and the peace and calmness it brings with it. It’s been very helpful to me these last 2. You might stop losing, or even gain, weight. Water retention due to the heat, your monthly period, or cheating will all lead to a weight loss stall. If you have a weight loss stall for more than a few days, there’s a couple things you can do: Do an “apple day” where you only eat 6 apples from lunch one day to lunch the next. I did, and wasn’t hungry, but was sick of apples. My sister preferred a steak day. You don’t eat anything until dinner and have one very big lean steak. That’s it. We both experienced weight loss the following morning after trying both things. Okay, you might occasionally get hungry, but for the most part you’ll be satisfied. I was much more hungry during the days before I started this diet when all I did was eat crap all the time. When you do experience hunger pangs, drink more water. Eat a zero calorie food (like celery). Do something to take your mind off of it. And I think this goes without saying: you will need support. Find a friend who’s also dieting or join a group on Facebook. I was lucky enough to have my sister doing it with me for the first 2. Since I’m doing another 2. I still have her because she’s done it twice and knows how difficult it is. Jason has been a huge support, too. He’s been eating with me, though he’s not necessarily following the diet. And my family and friends have been my cheerleaders. But I also know it works. My sister did this diet back in January and lost close to 2. She also did it with me again over the last 2. I can tell you I’m sleeping better, my allergies aren’t as bad, I feel better overall, my blood pressure is normal (I had high blood pressure), I’m not as moody, and I’m not craving crap. My depression, which is normally at its worst during this time of year, is nowhere to be found. I couldn’t be happier! Whether they really need them or not, sales figures show that plenty of people are purchasing supplements. Here are some of the most popular supplement categories: Multivitamins. Taking a daily multivitamin with minerals has long been considered nutritional . But better than a multivitamin is to fill in the gaps with food that offers so much more than supplements. But they're included in the list because they are designed to supplement the diet. For people who can't eat regular food because of illnesses, these products are good alternatives. When you take supplements, there are often cryptic ingredients that could be potentially risky. But experts say that whenever you can, you should choose calcium from foods such as dairy products, fortified foods, dark leafy greens, soybeans, beans, fish, and raisins. Continued. The U. S. Dietary Guidelines recommends three servings of low- fat or non- fat dairy each day to help bridge this gap. But there are plenty of people who shun dairy, the best source of calcium in our diets. If you do choose a calcium supplement, look for calcium citrate or lactate. These forms are best absorbed by the body, says Grotto. B vitamins. B vitamins include thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B- 6, and vitamin B- 1. Many of us don't need these supplements, experts say. And besides, our diets are plentiful in B vitamins. Most of us should skip the supplements and get our Bs from grains, dark green vegetables, orange juice, and enriched foods. People with certain medical conditions or who take drugs that interfere with vitamin absorption may also require supplementation. Vitamin CVitamin C is often taken in an effort to ward off colds, though there's little proof this works. Because it is a water- soluble vitamin, excess amounts are excreted. Your health- care provider may tell you to take vitamin C if you have a wound that's healing. But wound otherwise, go for food sources. Inuit Eskimos, who get high amounts of omega- 3 fatty acids from eating fatty fish, also tend to have increased HDL cholesterol and decreased triglycerides (fats in the blood). Several studies show that fish oil supplements reduce triglyceride levels. Walnuts, which are rich in alpha linolenic acid or ALA, which can convert to omega- 3s in the body, have been reported to lower total cholesterol and triglycerides in people with high cholesterol levels. High blood pressure Several clinical studies suggest that diets rich in omega- 3 fatty acids lower blood pressure in people with hypertension. An analysis of 1. Doses this high, however, should only be taken under the direction of a physician. Heart disease The role of omega- 3 fatty acids in cardiovascular disease is well established. One of the best ways to help prevent heart disease is to eat a diet low in saturated fat, and to eat foods that are rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (including omega- 3 fatty acids). Clinical evidence suggests that EPA and DHA (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid), the two omega- 3 fatty acids found in fish oil help reduce risk factors for heart disease, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Fish oil has been shown to lower levels of triglycerides (fats in the blood), and to lower the risk of death, heart attack, stroke, and abnormal heart rhythms in people who have already had a heart attack. Fish oil also appears to help prevent and treat atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) by slowing the development of plaque and blood clots, which can clog arteries. Large population studies suggest that getting omega- 3 fatty acids in the diet, primarily from fish, helps protect against stroke caused by plaque build up and blood clots in the arteries that lead to the brain. Eating at least 2 servings of fish per week can reduce the risk of stroke by as much as 5. However, high doses of fish oil and omega- 3 fatty acids may increase the risk of bleeding. People who eat more than 3 grams of omega- 3 fatty acids per day (equivalent to 3 servings of fish per day) may have higher risk for hemorrhagic stroke, a potentially fatal type of stroke in which an artery in the brain leaks or ruptures. Studies also suggest that omega- 3 fatty acids may have antioxidant properties that improve endothelial function and may contribute to heart benefits. Diabetes People with diabetes often have high triglyceride and low HDL levels. Omega- 3 fatty acids from fish oil can help lower triglycerides and apoproteins (markers of diabetes), and raise HDL. So eating foods or taking fish oil supplements may help people with diabetes. Another type of omega- 3 fatty acid, ALA (from flaxseed, for example) may not have the same benefit as fish oil. Some people with diabetes can't efficiently convert ALA to a form of omega- 3 fatty acids that the body can use. Also, some people with type 2 diabetes may have slight increases in fasting blood sugar when taking fish oil. So talk to your doctor to see if fish oil is right for you. Rheumatoid arthritis Most clinical studies examining omega- 3 fatty acid supplements for arthritis have focused on rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints. Several small studies have found that fish oil helps reduce symptoms of RA, including joint pain and morning stiffness. One study suggests that people with RA who take fish oil may be able to lower their dose of non- steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, unlike prescription medications, fish oil does not appear to slow progression of RA, only to treat the symptoms. Joint damage still occurs. Laboratory studies suggest that diets rich in omega- 3 fatty acids (and low in the inflammatory omega- 6 fatty acids) may help people with osteoarthritis. New Zealand green lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), another potential source of omega- 3 fatty acids, has been reported to reduce joint stiffness and pain, increase grip strength, and improve walking pace in a small group of people with osteoarthritis. For some people, symptoms worsened before they improved. An analysis of 1. RA or joint pain caused by inflammatory bowel disease (IBS) and painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea). The results suggest that omega- 3 fatty acids, along with conventional therapies, such as NSAIDs, may help relieve joint pain associated with these conditions. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) Several small studies suggest that EPA and fish oil may help reduce symptoms of lupus, an autoimmune condition characterized by fatigue and joint pain. However, two small studies found that fish oil had no effect on lupus nephritis (kidney disease caused by lupus, a frequent complication of the disease). Osteoporosis Some studies suggest that omega- 3 fatty acids may help increase levels of calcium in the body and improve bone strength, although not all results were positive. Some studies also suggest that people who do not get enough of some essential fatty acids (particularly EPA and gamma- linolenic acid (GLA), an omega- 6 fatty acid) are more likely to have bone loss than those with normal levels of these fatty acids. In a study of women over 6. EPA and GLA supplements had less bone loss over 3 years than those who took placebo. Many of these women also experienced an increase in bone density. Depression Research is not clear on whether taking omega- 3 fatty acids can help relieve depression symptoms. Several studies show that people who took omega- 3 fatty acids in addition to prescription antidepressants had a greater improvement in symptoms than those who took antidepressants alone. Other studies suggest that omega- 3 fatty acid intake helps protect against postpartum depression, among other benefits. However, some studies found no benefit. Studies are also mixed on whether omega- 3 fatty acids alone have any effect on depression. Depression is a serious illness and you should not try to treat it on your own. See a doctor for help. Bipolar disorder In a clinical study of 3. But another 4- month long clinical study treating people with bipolar depression and rapid cycling bipolar disorder did not show that EPA helped reduce symptoms. Schizophrenia Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that people with schizophrenia take omega- 3 fatty acids, they experience an improvement in symptoms. However, more recent research found that EPA supplements were no better than placebo in improving symptoms of this condition. Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) Children with ADHD may have low levels of certain essential fatty acids (including EPA and DHA). In a clinical study of nearly 1. However, studies examining whether omega- 3 fatty acids help improve symptoms of ADHD have produced mixed results. A few studies show that omega- 3 fatty acids help improve behavioral symptoms. But most of these studies were not well designed. One study that looked at DHA in addition to stimulant therapy (standard therapy for ADHD) found no effect. More research is needed. In the meantime, eating foods that are high in omega- 3 fatty acids is a reasonable approach for someone with ADHD. Cognitive decline Several studies show that reduced intake of omega- 3 fatty acids is associated with increased risk of age- related cognitive decline or dementia, including Alzheimer disease. Scientists believe the omega- 3 fatty acid DHA is protective against Alzheimer disease and dementia. Skin disorders In one clinical study, 1. UV rays after taking fish oil supplements. However, topical sunscreens are much better at protecting the skin from damaging effects of the sun than omega- 3 fatty acids. In another study of 4. EPA with their prescription medications did better than those treated with the medications alone. However, a larger study of people with psoriasis found no benefit from fish oil. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) Results are mixed as to whether omega- 3 fatty acids can help reduce symptoms of Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis, two types of IBD. Some studies suggest that omega- 3 fatty acids may help when added to medication, such as sulfasalazine (a standard medication for IBD). Others show no effect. More studies are needed. Fish oil supplements can cause side effects that are similar to symptoms of IBD (such as flatulence, belching, bloating, and diarrhea). Asthma Studies examining omega- 3 fatty acids for asthma are mixed. In one small, well- designed clinical study of 2. EPA and DHA for 1. However, most studies have shown no effect. Macular degeneration A questionnaire given to more than 3,0. Similarly, a clinical study comparing 3. Menstrual pain In one study of 4. Colon cancer Eating foods rich in omega- 3 fatty acids seems to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. For example, Eskimos, who tend to have a high fat diet, but eat significant amounts of fish rich in omega- 3 fatty acids, have a low rate of colorectal cancer. Animal studies and laboratory studies have found that omega- 3 fatty acids prevent worsening of colon cancer. Preliminary studies suggest that taking fish oil daily may help slow the progression of colon cancer in people with early stages of the disease. If you have colorectal cancer, ask your doctor before taking any supplements. Breast cancer Although not all experts agree, women who eat foods rich in omega- 3 fatty acids over many years may be less likely to develop breast cancer. More research is needed to understand the effect that omega- 3 fatty acids may have on the prevention of breast cancer. Prostate cancer Population- based studies of groups of men suggest that a low- fat diet including omega- 3 fatty acids (from fish or fish oil) may help prevent the development of prostate cancer. For many years I suspected that I had some form of thyroid problem based on my own research and symptoms like dry skin, occasional fatigue, trouble losing weight after having a baby, and hair thinning, but I was never able to get answers from conventional tests which showed that my T3 and T4 thyroid hormones were in the normal range. Thankfully, I found an amazing doctor who specializes in hormones and endocrine problems and with additional blood testing and a thyroid ultrasound, he was able to finally figure out what I was struggling with: Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (an autoimmune condition where the body creates antibodies to the thyroid). What are Autoimmune Problems? It turns out that many different disorders and diseases are autoimmune in nature but they manifest in different ways. As the Paleo Mom explains: Autoimmune disease is caused by the immune system losing the ability to differentiate proteins belonging to your own body with proteins belonging to a foreign invader (like a bacteria, virus or parasite). What causes symptoms is the build up of damage to cells, tissues and/or organs in the body. Which proteins/cells are attacked is what separates once disease from another. In Rheumatoid Arthritis, the tissues of your joints are attacked. In psoriasis, proteins within the layers of cells that make up your skin are attacked. However, the root cause is the same. Genetic predisposition to autoimmunity makes up about one third of your risk of developing an autoimmune disease. The other two thirds of your risk come from environmental factors, which include: diet, lifestyle, infections (both prior and persistent) exposure to toxins, hormones, weight, etc. While you cannot control your genetics or whether or not you had mono as a kid, you do have an immense amount of control over your diet and lifestyle (and the extent that these affect hormones and weight and even toxin exposure). By removing the foods that contribute to a leaky gut, gut dysbiosis (the wrong numbers, relative quantities, or types of microorganisms typically growing in the wrong locations in your gut), hormone imbalance, and that stimulate inflammation and the immune system, you can create the opportunity for your body to heal. By addressing important lifestyle factors and changing your focus to eating nutrient- dense foods that support optimal gut health (and optimal health of your gut microorganisms), that restore levels of important nutrients and provide all of the building blocks that your body needs to heal and properly regulate the immune system, that help resolve inflammation and support organ function, you create an environment in your body conducive to healing. Why Other Diets May Not Work. From my understanding, once the body has an autoimmune reaction, it can sometimes be necessary to remove a wide variety of potentially inflammatory foods for a short time and then reintroduce to test the response. The idea is similar to the theory behind the GAPS protocol but geared toward addressing autoimmune issues instead. Since the body is in a state of heightened immune response, removing these foods can help it get back into a state of balance and reduce the autoimmune reaction. Technically, an autoimmune disease cannot be “cured”, but in many cases, it is possible to put the condition into remission with careful diet and lifestyle changes. My Experience. I switched to an autoimmune protocol diet after being diagnosed with Hashimotos in hopes of giving my immune system a little time to recover. I was hopeful that it would be beneficial, but I was AMAZED at how quickly it helped. Within the first week, I saw my bloating go away, my thyroid nodule felt noticeably smaller, I had more energy (after the first couple of days), and my skin improved. Over the course of the almost two months I did the strict protocol, I lost some of my stubborn weight and felt incredibly better. It also helped me identify foods that I was not responding well to, but that I didn’t realize were problematic (like eggs, which was confirmed by blood test later). I was able to reintroduce many of the foods after that time without a problem and I felt continually better (until I created a flare by not sleeping and stressing about finishing my book). Sleep and stress are both huge factors in overall health and are especially important for those with any kind of health condition. The Specifics of the Autoimmune Diet. The general idea of the autoimmune diet is that you are removing any potentially inflammatory foods, but the specifics are a bit more difficult. Some sources consider foods like fruit and sweet potatoes ok, while others do not. For reference, some sources that I find most helpful are: This particular post from the Paleo Mom is really helpful in understanding what foods are considered safe and which ones to temporarily avoid. I’ll also be posting more autoimmune friendly recipes and meal plans soon, but those are great resources for getting started. You can download the complete food list I used by clicking here (PDF). It can seem overwhelming, but this way of eating is actually relatively simple if you follow a template. My typical day on the autoimmune diet was: Breakfast– A scramble of meat and cooked vegetables, a cup of homemade bone broth, some fermented vegetables, and supplements. Lunch– A huge salad with leftover protein (meat, offal or fish) and a small piece of fruit, a cup of bone broth, fermented water kefir or kombucha and olives. Dinner– A stir fry with some type of protein (meat, offal, seafood) with a lot of vegetables and allowed spices, evening supplements and at least 1 cup of healthy starch like cooked winter squash, pumpkin, etc. I also made a lot of stuffed squashes and soups. We rely heavily on big salads, stir frys and casseroles while on the autoimmune diet. When I first started, it seemed like I couldn’t eat anything and I was depriving myself of everything, but it is important to remember that many times the body is deficient in certain nutrients because of an autoimmune disease so during the course of the 3. I focused on extensively nourishing my body with as many high quality proteins, vegetables and healthy fats as I could consume. I may have been tired of my food choices at times, but I certainly never went hungry. I also focused on consuming a TON of vegetables during this time, after talking to Dr. Terry Wahls and reading her book, The Wahls Protocol. Wahls emphasizes the importance of consuming at least 9 cups of vegetables a day, especially brightly colored vegetables, leafy greens, and onions and garlic. Personally, I found that these factors were equally important to recovery for me: Sleep. I love to stay up late and skimp on sleep so I can get more done. My body does not love this. I’ve found that when I sleep at least 8- 8. I see my health markers improve (blood tests, fasting blood glucose, etc). Stress reduction. Also a tough one for me, but stress can have as much of an impact as diet on gut health and hormone levels. I found that even with a good diet, I started to notice symptoms creeping back in while under the stress of finishing my book. Supplements. I hesitated to include this part because if diet, stress and sleep aren’t under control, this won’t help at all, but I found certain supplements helped tremendously once I had optimized other factors. I personally take: WP- Throid thyroid medication (under the care of my doctor), Betaine HCL with protein meals, 5- MTHF and Methyl- B1. Folate, Probiotics, Fermented Cod Liver Oil, Cortisol support, Omega- 3s, Vitamin D (and sunshine daily in the morning), Magnesium, L- glutamine, Gelatin, and Vitamin C. I would highly recommend seeing a good functional medicine doctor and finding out what you personally need before taking any supplements. Autoimmune Diet Encouragement. This diet is difficult. Sometimes the best things in life require some work and denial of self. An elimination diet is temporary and it gives you a window into your own body and what you need to eat for optimal health. Don’t let is cause you extra stress. Don’t let this keep you up at night. Try to focus on nourishing and loving your body and providing it with the building blocks it needs to function optimally. If you can, encourage a friend or family member to make the journey with you for support. Let me know below what your struggle is and the results you see! Week Diet Plan Review From REAL User. We always get lots of promises on how following a diet plan will help us to lose some pounds. The 3 Week Diet Plan by Brian Flatt is no different. You may want to ask if it. I bought the program myself and have gone through it all the way down. Here I’ll share all the facts about this diet plan. Is It Really Possible To Lose Up To 2. Pounds In Just 2. Days? Answer: Yes, it’s possible. I have done it myself and so I can say without doubt, that this is absolutely achievable. That’s Me. I personally lost 3. Honestly, I didn’t follow the 3 week diet plan to lose all that weight. When I started my weight loss journey, I did my own research and based on that I created a plan for me. My own diet plan, was about the same as the 3 week diet plan. I completely changed my eating habits, reduced my calorie intake, started eating more proteins, did drink loads of water instead of sugared drinks and I integrated some fasting days. This is more or less the same plan as the 3 week diet plan. I also started doing workouts (from the Old School New Body Program) 3 times a week and each workout session was only around 3. You could do the same on your own and you can successfully lose weight too. I personally would recommend you invest in a program, like this one. It makes it much easier to get started (believe me) and you get everything you need. Plus you can save a lot of time, because you don’t have to do any research and you also don’t need to create your own meal plans. All that is already included within the 3 week diet plan. Review Overview. Summary. Overall, the 3 Week Diet plan is a solid, real plan, containing proper food and it's NOT a scam at all. The inside awning supports buckled under weight of water(I thought I had the awning tilted enough but not). The rv dealer told me that he could not order the parts because they did not make them anymore. The inside awning supports are the ones that attach the side of the unit and slide into the outside awning supports which attach to the awning. The inside supports have holes in the sides for various heights of the awning. Can I order these from anyone? Current address is listed in out contacts. Contacted Dometic and they gave me name of suppliler who is sending parts to me.(7/8/0. Dometic when I contacted them referred me to company named All Seasons with phone number 1- 8. The RV dealer in Dothan, al told me that I needed to order a complete new awning for over $1,0. All Seasons cost me a grand total of $7. Of course you have to invert the brace/awning connection but the brace doesn't rub the awning turn it back around for stowing. Hope that makes sense if not I'll draw you a picture. No love & Kisses but plenty respect.. The recess in clutch heads looks like a bowtie. In a pinch, a clutch head screw can be driven by a slotted screwdriver. A worn tip on a driver can easily be restored by grinding off the end. Clutch head screws were popular in mobile home construction and electric motors. The size is the diameter in inches of the bit point. Its advantages are great resistance to camout and 4 possible positions for the driver. Henry Ford used such screws in the Model A, but dropped it when Robertson refused to give him exclusive rights to its use. The most common size in RV's is #2. It had stood on a lot in Florida with salt air and spray assaulting its finish for almost ten years before we came along. It was severely oxidized and needed other help, as well. The other help we have completed, but the exterior still needs additional refurbishing. So far, I've used everything which has come my way, including Metal (good stuff), #7 Rubbing Compound (also good stuff), Meguiar's cleaning compound (good result), Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound (not so hot), and several which were less than adequate, to be generous to them. These included Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish, Quick 'n Brite, Gel Gloss, Lite Touch and Turtle Wax Color Back. However, it didn't stay- -it looked almost as bad a couple weeks later as it did originally. It feels nice and smooth, but looks tacky. Write to me at? Subject=Aluminium Polishing. I had the same problem with mine, ( '8. Model R) . Nothing I tried ever seemed to work. Finally , I bit the bullet and ordered 2 gallons of clearcoat from an Airstream Dealer. I cleaned the trailer all over with soap and water. Then I wiped it all over with a residue remover (from body shop supply). Finally, I masked all the windows, lights, etc. It immediately looked like new and still does almost three years later. The reason I did it this way is that I had an Airstream that was factory clearcoated and it always looked clean with no water streaks or stain ever showing. The Can Am Trailer service rep told me that this was the way they had been restoring Avions for a long time. I tried a small patch with ordinary clearcoat before buying the Airstream stuff and it worked great. I was told to use Airstream Clearcote because it was specially formulated for aluminum which expands and contracts a lot with varying temperatures, and that ordinary clearcoat would crack. The only drawback was that it was quite expensive stuff. Somewhere around $1. I remember . But , it was worth every penny to see that beautiful new trailer look. It is a bit difficult to spray on. G Just got back from Cayo Repair in Michigan. Had the Avion out there for a Perma- Cote job. He did a wonderful job on it. It looks like it's brand new. It certainly is worth the trip and expense. Just thought I'd let you know in case anyone asks you about what to do with an Avion that has a problem with oxidization of the skin.? Subject=Avion. Light polishing won't remove it. Even polishing with the most aggressive polish probably won't faze it either. Since the anodizing is so hard to remove it's best just to clean and brighten it. The matte finish will always be there. This assumes that the skins were heavily anodized. I have seen aluminum that had only a very light anodizing but more than likely those trailers have a good solid coating. I really don't know what would work best to clean and brighten them. You can try our polish but in all probability other products would work as well at a considerable lower cost. We found too many RV'ers didn't realize they could use Protect All inside as well as outside so we got sneaky and designed a separate label. My associate here tells me Avions are anodized aluminum and not meant to be shiny. They are supposed to have a matte finish. Protect All will not make it shiny but it will still provide it's slick protective coating. Best Regards. ? Subject=Shining an Avion. Meat is mainly composed of water, protein, and fat. It is edible raw, but is normally eaten after it has been cooked and seasoned or processed in a variety of ways. Unprocessed meat will spoil or rot within hours or days as a result of infection with and decomposition by bacteria and fungi. Most often, meat refers to skeletal muscle and associated fat and other tissues, but it may also describe other edible tissues such as offal. The term is related to mad in Danish, mat in Swedish and Norwegian, and matur in Icelandic and Faroese, which also mean 'food'. The word mete also exists in Old Frisian (and to a lesser extent, modern West Frisian) to denote important food, differentiating it from swiets (sweets) and dierfied (animal feed). ![]()
History. The type of meat consumed varies much between different cultures, changes over time, depending on factors such as tradition and the availability of the animals. The amount and kind of meat consumed also varies by income, both between countries and within a given country. The trend towards selling meat in pre- packaged cuts has increased the demand for larger breeds of cattle, which are better suited to producing such cuts. ![]() 17 Day Diet Author Murder In The KitchenVegetarians choose not to eat meat because of ethical, economic, environmental, religious or health concerns that are associated with meat production and consumption. While meat consumption in most industrialized countries is at high, stable levels.. For example, poultry meat has increased by 7. However, on the contrary, bovine meat has decreased from 1. In cattle, certain growth features are controlled by recessive genes which have not so far been controlled, complicating breeding. For instance, a recombinantbacterium has been developed which improves the digestion of grass in the rumen of cattle, and some specific features of muscle fibres have been genetically altered. The multiple asexual reproduction of animals bearing desirable traits can thus be anticipated. Low temperatures tend to prolong animal development and high temperatures tend to retard it. Scientists disagree, however, about how exactly the plane of nutrition influences carcase composition. These include the treatment of feed with formalin to protect amino acids during their passage through the rumen, the recycling of manure by feeding it back to cattle mixed with feed concentrates, or the partial conversion of petroleumhydrocarbons to protein through microbial action. It may also decrease the tenderness of meat, although research on this is inconclusive. These include nitrogenous compounds, such as amino acids, and inorganic substances such as minerals. The remaining protein mass consists of connective tissue (collagen and elastin) as well as organelle tissue. When myoglobin is exposed to oxygen, reddish oxymyoglobin develops, making myoglobin- rich meat appear red. The redness of meat depends on species, animal age, and fibre type: Red meat contains more narrow muscle fibres that tend to operate over long periods without rest. Wild animals such as deer are typically leaner than farm animals, leading those concerned about fat content to choose game such as venison. Decades of breeding meat animals for fatness is being reversed by consumer demand for meat with less fat. The fatty deposits that exist with the muscle fibers in meats soften meat when it is cooked and improve the flavor through chemical changes initiated through heat that allow the protein and fat molecules to interact. The fat, when cooked with meat, also makes the meat seem juicier. However, the nutritional contribution of the fat is mainly calories as opposed to protein. As fat content rises, the meat's contribution to nutrition declines. In addition, there is cholesterol associated with fat surrounding the meat. The cholesterol is a lipid associated with the kind of saturated fat found in meat. The increase in meat consumption after 1. While each kind of meat has about the same content of protein and carbohydrates, there is a very wide range of fat content. Production. These procedures are called slaughter and butchery, respectively. There is ongoing research into producing meat in vitro, that is, outside of animals. Transport. Depending on its length and circumstances, this may exert stress and injuries on the animals, and some may die en route. Death results from the one or the other procedure, depending on the methods employed. Stunning can be effected through asphyxiating the animals with carbon dioxide, shooting them with a gun or a captive bolt pistol, or shocking them with electric current. The remaining glycogen, about 1. Because of these changes, the meat is tender and pliable when cooked just after death or after the resolution of rigor, but tough when cooked during rigor. Hypoxanthine, a breakdown product of ATP, contributes to the meat's flavor and odor, as do other products of the decomposition of muscle fat and protein. Meat additives include the following. It imparts flavor but also inhibits microbial growth, extends the product's shelf life and helps emulsifying finely processed products, such as sausages. Ready- to- eat meat products normally contain about 1. The use of nitrite's precursor nitrate is now limited to a few products such as dry sausage, prosciutto or parma ham. They are used to increase the water- binding and emulsifying ability of meat proteins, but also limit lipid oxidation and flavor loss, and reduce microbial growth. They include spices or oleoresins extracted from them, herbs, vegetables and essential oils. They include proteolytic enzymes, acids, salt and phosphate. They substitute for the process of natural fermentation that acidifies some meat products such as hard salami or prosciutto. Meat imitates are typically some form of processed soybean (tofu, tempeh), but they can also be based on wheat gluten or even fungi (quorn). Environmental impact. Among these are greenhouse gas emissions, fossil energy use, water use, water quality changes, and effects on grazed ecosystems. The livestock sector may be the largest source of water pollution (due to animal wastes, fertilizers, pesticides), and it contributes to emergence of antibiotic resistance. It accounts for over 8% of global human water use. It is by far the biggest cause of land use, as it accounts for nearly 4. Substitution of animal manures for synthetic fertilizers in crop production can be environmentally significant, as between 4. MJ of fossil fuel energy are used per kg of nitrogen in manufacture of synthetic nitrogenous fertilizers. Spoilage is caused by the practically unavoidable infection and subsequent decomposition of meat by bacteria and fungi, which are borne by the animal itself, by the people handling the meat, and by their implements. Meat can be kept edible for a much longer time . Without the application of preservatives and stabilizers, the fats in meat may also begin to rapidly decompose after cooking or processing, leading to an objectionable taste known as warmed over flavor. Methods of preparation. Fresh meat cuts or processed cuts may produce iridescence, commonly thought to be due to spoilage but actually caused structural coloration and diffraction of the light. It may be ground then formed into patties (as hamburgers or croquettes), loaves, or sausages, or used in loose form (as in . In Europe, alder is the traditional smoking wood, but oak is more often used now, and beech to a lesser extent. In North America, hickory, mesquite, oak, pecan, alder, maple, and fruit- tree woods are commonly used for smoking. Meat can also be cured by pickling, preserving in salt or brine (see salted meat and other curing methods). Other kinds of meat are marinated and barbecued, or simply boiled, roasted, or fried. Meat is generally eaten cooked, but many recipes call for raw beef, veal or fish (tartare). Steak tartare is a meat dish made from finely chopped or minced rawbeef or horse meat. Meat dishes are usually described by their source (animal and part of body) and method of preparation (e. Meat is a typical base for making sandwiches. Popular varieties of sandwich meat include ham, pork, salami and other sausages, and beef, such as steak, roast beef, corned beef, pepperoni, and pastrami. Meat can also be molded or pressed (common for products that include offal, such as haggis and scrapple) and canned. A study of 4. 00,0. European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition and published in 2. The metastudy reported mortality ratios, where lower numbers indicated fewer deaths, for fish eaters to be 0. Often, these compounds are not very dangerous themselves but can be metabolized in the body to form harmful by- products, so any actual toxicological effects may depend on the individual genome, diet, and history of the consumer. Toxins may be introduced to meat as part of animal feed, as veterinary drug residues, or during processing and cooking. IARC classified processed meat (e. That study noted that, . Animal fat, particularly from ruminants, tends to have a higher percentage of saturated fat vs. The saturated fat found in meat has been associated with significantly raised risks of colon cancer. However, after further adjustment for body mass index, cigarette smoking and other covariates, no association with red meat consumption was found. However, they concluded that 'the study is not large enough to exclude small or moderate differences for specific causes of death, and more research on this topic is required'. In this population, reduction of processed meat consumption to less than 2. Murder of a President . James Garfield. Kathryn Erbe .. Lucretia Garfield. Will Janowitz .. Charles Guiteau. An Apograph Productions Inc. Garfield, This morning while reading one of the many accounts of our dear President's heroism.. I was so overcome that I thought I would write and tell you how very, very much I felt for you. I have not offered a single prayer since our President was first shot but that was for his recovery. My papa and mama do not know that I have written this but I felt I must do it. Our Dear President has gone from our love, to the love of God and his angels. Narrator: James Garfield had been in office just 2. Already many Americans had come to see in his youth, brilliance and kindness the makings of a truly great president. But now he was dead, brought down by an assassin, and - - some believed - - his own doctors. Candice Millard, Author, Destiny of the Republic: Garfield is on the floor of the station. So someone finds an old horsehair and hay mattress, and they put the President on that, and take him to a room upstairs. James Blaine (John Hutton): Doctors, what do you need? Dr. Purvis (Lee Davison): Blankets. James Blaine (John Hutton): You! Go! Candice Millard, Author, Destiny of the Republic: Garfield's first concern was for his wife Lucretia. James Blaine (John Hutton): Sir, what can I do? James Garfield (Shuler Hensley): Lucretia - - tell her I'm all right. Candice Millard, Author, Destiny of the Republic: He wanted to make sure that when she heard about this she heard it from him. James Blaine (John Hutton): Don't you worry. I'll send a telegram. Dr. Doctor Willard Bliss (James Eckhouse): Let me through please! I know the man! James Blaine (John Hutton): Let him in! Nancy Tomes, Historian: Within minutes 1. Dr. Doctor Willard Bliss (James Eckhouse): Gently, easy. Flesh wound on the right arm. Entry wound in the back. Nancy Tomes, Historian: They didn't know the exact track of the bullet. They couldn't tell how much damage it had done. Dr. Doctor Willard Bliss (James Eckhouse): I'm worried about his liver. President, I have to probe for the bullet. This is going to be painful. Hold him steady gentlemen. I've done that hundreds of times - - I've never seen a man hold that steady. James Garfield (Shuler Hensley): Did you get it? Dr. Doctor Willard Bliss (James Eckhouse): No. Try to relax. James Garfield (Shuler Hensley): Lucretia. Narrator: James Garfield wasn't born to greatness, but to trouble and hardship. Just before his second birthday, a wildfire threatened the family's homestead on the Ohio frontier. James's father saved the farm, but died soon afterward. His mother had little time for grief. Within days of the funeral, she was working in the fields. James would grow up at the raw edge of poverty. Mary Lintern, Garfield National Historic Site: As he got older he absolutely detested his station in life. He had to face the scorn and the pity of people in the community. When he was sixteen he hired himself out to a local farmer and the farmer's daughter takes a liking to Garfield, and the father says to Garfield that no daughter of his is going to be seen with the likes of a poor boy like him. Narrator: . I lament sorely that I was born poor. And he got this idea that he was going to sail the high seas. Narrator: . The blue expanse seemed a region of enchantment. Although James dreamed of the high seas, he had to settle for work as a crewman on the Ohio and Erie Canal. Candice Millard, Author, Destiny of the Republic: He was on the canal one night and everyone else was asleep. He slips and he falls into the water. And he's desperately thrashing because he can't swim and he feels the, this rope. And he's pulling at it but he knows that he hadn't tied it to anything on the boat. But miraculously it hooks and he's able to pull himself up onto the boat. To his mind, God had wanted to save him for a purpose, and he was supposed to do something larger with his life. Narrator: James's seafaring dreams were cut short. Six weeks after setting out, he returned home, deathly ill with malaria. While he was recovering, his mother, desperate to set her son on a better path, handed him her life savings. Eliza Garfield's $1. As James later recalled, . He had coarse clothing, he had bushy hair, he was a confirmed rustic. But he had a lot going for him too at the same time. He was very charismatic, a tall man, broad shoulders, piercing blue eyes and he was extremely intelligent. Narrator: The Western Reserve Eclectic Institute transformed Garfield from a rough canal man into a passionate and determined student. When the money ran out, he paid his way by working as a janitor and carpenter around the school. As James's horizons widened, his ambitions grew. And he got to a point where he was smarter than some of his teachers. Candice Millard, Author, Destiny of the Republic: He was such an extraordinary student, that by his second year, instead of working as the janitor, they made him a professor of literature, mathematics and ancient languages. Narrator: Among the students assigned to Garfield's Greek literature class was Lucretia Rudolph, the daughter of one of the school's benefactors. One day, when the students gathered for a photograph, James seized the opportunity. Candice Millard, Author, Destiny of the Republic: Just before it was about to be taken, James whispered something to the photographer and he's able to slip in right next to Lucretia and she's sort of surprised that he would take such liberties but that was the kind of man he was. Narrator: For James and Lucretia, love didn't come easily. Although James proposed within six months of their class photo, both had lingering doubts. Mary Lintern, Garfield National Historic Site: They were emotionally incompatible. Garfield was very expressive. And Lucretia was just too shy to be openly affectionate with him. When they would come together, she would be very stiff and formal. Kathryn Allamong Jacob, Historian: He writes to her saying, . They need to talk about things together. And she reserves the right to be critical of him, and he has to listen, he has to hear her out. They are both still filled with doubt and uncertainty. Narrator: Despite their apprehensions, Lucretia and James were married on November 1. Their first years were miserable: as Lucretia endured repeated pregnancies and miscarriages, James was usually absent, pursuing a fledgling career in politics. Lucretia Garfield (Kathryn Erbe, audio): Dear James, There are hours when my heart almost breaks with the cruel thought that our marriage is based upon the cold stern word Duty. I hope time may teach me to be satisfied with the love you will teach your heart to give. Mary Lintern, Garfield National Historic Site: He was an extremely selfish man for those first years. Garfield was just finding his powers and he was finding just how incredibly magnetic he was. He's speaking and people are throwing flowers and applauding him. Women are falling all over him, men are falling all over him. That's pretty powerful. Why does he want to stay home with shy little Lucretia? Narrator: Just as Garfield's political career was getting off the ground, the country plunged into civil war. James Garfield (Shuler Hensley, audio): My Dear Crete: The news is causing great excitement. It seems to me that the wanton attack on Sumter can result in nothing but a long and bloody war. I long to be in the strife and help fight it out. We must stand by the country and sustain its authority. Narrator: James joined the Union Army in 1. With little training and no experience, he headed up a small regiment sent to clear the Confederates out of Eastern Kentucky. At the Battle of Middle Creek Garfield led his men to an audacious victory. The triumph brought him a flash of fame. What stayed with Garfield, however, was the memory of stepping into a clearing after the battle, and seeing what he thought were sleeping soldiers. His heart froze when he realized that the young men were dead. At that moment, Garfield would later recall, something went out of him that never came back - - . There, for the first time, he came face to face with slavery. Heather Cox Richardson, Historian: It's important to try and get your head into what it looked like for these soldiers to go down and see men and women and children literally imprisoned on these plantations. And Garfield had an incredibly visceral reaction. |
